About the Item

A French ormolu-mounted Marquetry table Ambulante attributed to Henry Dasson (1825-18991) Inlaid overall with trellis-foliate marquetry, the serpentine-shaped rectangular top with a moulded ormolu edge and beveled glass top, above a frieze fitted with a spring-loaded secret drawer, on four square shaped tapering legs, each headed by a foliate clasp, joined by a stretcher, on scroll sabots Transition style circa 1885 For same design by Henry Dasson: Sotheby’s New York, 19th April 2007, Lot 24, A Private Collection: Volume II, Important Furniture and Decoration Inspired by XVIIIth Century Models Christie’s London, 2nd December 1998, Lot 87 Auction 6507, Important European Furniture Literature: D.Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXème Siècle pp 146-151 C.Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, p. 35 A.Pradère, Les ébénistes français de Louis XIV à la révolution, Paris 1989, p. 288, figs. 311-312 for slight variants of this particular piece. As a cabinet-maker and a bronze-caster, Henry Dasson executed in his Paris workshop sumptuous copies of royal 18th century models and some pieces of his own modified 18th century design. He used for his pieces of furniture and « objets d’art » the very finest ormolu mounts with high quality mercurial gilding. He purchased the firm of the cabinet-maker Charles Winckelsen upon his death in 1871 and mainly produced in the Louis XV and Louis XVI style. His participation at the Paris 1878 Universal Exhibition was highly remarked with a Louis XVI style table, all in bronze and considered as a « chasing masterpiece », and a copy of the famous King Louis XV desk (original piece exhibited at the Versailles Castle). At the 1889 Universal Exhibition, he won a « Grand Prix » for his beautiful furniture. The overall design of this table is one which is generally associated with Bernard II Van Riesen Burgh (after 1696-c.1766).He produced a number of these tables, such as the one delivered by Lazare Duvaux for Madame de Pompadour; others with bois de bout decoration and some fitted a Sèvres Porcelain top. Roger Vandercruse dit La Croix (d.1799), commonly known as RVLC, was equally prolific in his production of small tables and at least two variants of our model are recorded (see Pradère, figs. 311-312).
