Antique Chippendale Side Table by Butler of Dublin

About the Item

A Chippendale side table/centre table by Butler of Dublin. The top in figured mahogany with solid mahogany legs and frieze; finished on all four sides with applied blind fret to the frieze and legs and with the original pierced brackets. Irish mahogany furniture is often polished to a rich dark colour. Provenance: A country house near Kendal. The family moved from Ireland in the 1960s. Michael Butler, from a family of Dublin cabinetmakers, is recorded at 26, 126 and 127 Upper Abbey Street, between 1885 1903, then as Michael Butler Ltd, Antique Galleries, from the same address between 1904 to 1912. His firm specialized in reproducing Irish 18th Century mahogany furniture. One of Butler's most prestigious commissions was to furnish the Viceregal Lodge in 1903, in preparation for a state visit. Other patrons of his included the Earl of Abercorn, the Earl and Countess of Coventry, the Countess of Clonmell and the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, who bought furniture for Clarence House.

  • Antique Chippendale Style Nutwood & Oak Side Table / Games Table W. Great Patina
    Located in Lisse, NL
Amazing workmanship sidetable, also for unforgettable games of poker, bridge etc. If you are looking for a beautiful sidetable to grace your living space then this all handcrafted specimen from the earliest years of the 20th century could be flying your way soon. This remarkable table with its amazingly hand-carved details and superb claw feet is extra rare, because it is made in the Chippendale Style. And the craftsmanship that was put into creating this antique would make Thomas Chippendale himself proud. You will hardly ever find a Chippendale Style table (or any other antique table for that matter) with such stunningly hand-carved details and for them to be as good as new after one hundred years shows that former owners too understood the importance of and the respect that one should have for this quality made piece. Apart from some minor imperfections to the table top the entire exterior AND interior of this table could not be in better condition. Even the original, inlaid, green felt 'playing field' of this table is as close to perfect as possible. This rare antique is both elegant and stately at the same time and for it not to have a maker's name on it, is strange to say the least. Because of the design, the quality of the make and the beauty of the materials, we believe this piece can only have been made by one of the European top makers from that era. By first pulling the rear legs out and then folding the top, this Chippendale table can be turned into a beautiful games table with a fine felt surface. Have you also noticed the practical and mint condition, solid tiger oak compartment that appears when you pull out the hind legs? That is where you can keep your cards and chips and maybe some board games. When closed, this also is the perfect sidetable for displaying an antique clock...
