Antique Regency Coromandel Inlaid Occasional Table, circa 1825

About the Item

This elegantly proportioned antique Regency occasional table is circa 1825 in date. This table has been masterfully crafted in coromandel wood and the circular top masterfully inlaid with a beautiful floral marquetry spray and butterfly. It is raised on an elegant hexagonal tapering column with a triform base that terminates in bun feet. There is no mistaking the unique quality and classical design, which is certain to make it a talking point in your home and a fine embellishment to your reception room. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 72 x width 68 x depth 68. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 4 inches x width 2 feet, 3 inches x depth 2 feet, 3 inches. Regency furniture During the Regency period it was fashionable to copy the classical furniture of the Roman and Greek times. Furniture had stopped evolving in design and had moved back to classical forms. The pioneer designers who represented this period were: Thomas Hope (1770-1831), George Smith (1804-28), Henry Holland (1745 - 1806). George IV had a major influence over the furniture makers of the time. This period saw the introduction of brass to wood from the previous marquetry that had been originally used. The sofa table was also introduced. The main features of the Regency period furniture were their simplicity, with straight, unbroken surfaces and lines. Coromandel wood or calamander wood is a valuable wood from India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It is of a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus; one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name calamander comes from the local sinhalese name, 'kalu-medhiriya', which means dark chamber; referring to the characteristic ebony black wood. Coromandel wood has been logged to extinction over the last 2 to 3 hundred years and is no longer available for new work in any quantity. Furniture in coromandel is so expensive and so well looked after that even recycling it is an unlikely source. A substitute, Macassar ebony, has similar characteristics and to the untrained eye is nearly the same but it lacks the depth of colour seen in genuine coromandel.
