An Art Deco Walnut and Cherry Side Table by Eugene Schoen
About the Item
New York cabinetmakers Schmieg, Hungate & Kotzian created commission pieces of outstanding quality by leading early twentieth century American designers including Donald Deskey, Eugene Schoen and Walter von Nessen.
Eugene Schoen (1880-1957) was born in New York and graduated from Columbia University with a degree in architecture where he won a scholarship to travel in Europe meeting the leading figures of the Viennese Secessionist movement, Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffman. Establishing an architectural office in New York in 1905, he was additionally drawn to modernism by his visit to the seminal 1925 Paris Exposition Des Arts Décoratifs. He later created a space to showcase his designs for furniture, textiles and rugs and successfully began designing interiors. He participated in the two important industrial design exhibits held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and exhibited furniture at the Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts. Alastair Duncan in American Art Deco, New York, 1986, p. 46, quotes a contemporary writer on Schoen's devotion "to the concept of no duplication ... each piece is individually made, and must differ from every other in some way."
