About the Item

Large Camel Bone Inlaid Octagonal Walnut Table, Damascus, Syria, c.1900. This handsome table showcases the skill of artisans who for centuries have crafted intricate textiles as well as items of useful furniture. This table is not only a beautiful piece but was also designed to be used as game board with a set of sixty four squares used to play the game of chess. The frame of the table is made of walnut while the inlay is of camel bone and wood stained jet black to resemble exotic ebony. Surrounding the square game board is a lovely pattern of organic interweaving naturalistic motifs. The table top is octagonal in shape and the eight sides of the top correspond to the eight legs that support the top. Each of the legs is a flat panel of walnut with a cut out profile taken from Persian architecture. Above the point of the arch on each of the eight legs is a recessed panel that features a symmetrical pattern of bone inlay in the shape of a star. The table retains the original hinges to the legs as the table was constructed to have the top lift off the base and for the base to be folded flat. This method allowed the table to be easily moved from place to place in a safe manner. Again, the artisan chose to embellish the shape of each leg with a pattern of bone inlay in an natural pattern of a climbing vine with small blossoms. The use of these contrasting materials and colours create a very pleasing effect and in the original interior, illuminated with lamp and candle light, these flashes of pale bone made the table sparkle and gleam. The large scale of this table is unusual and enables it to be used easily as a side table between chairs or at the end of a sofa as it will accommodate a lamp and other objects.
