Modernist Tray Holder or Side Table in Walnut for The Piero Portaluppi House
About the Item
Probably the only piece of furniture with a modular structure designed by Portaluppi: the tray holder is made of six cylindrical elements that turn on a central elliptic linchpin. Also called “i petali” (the petals) for the look it has, the tray holder was originally designed with nine elements. Our replica mimics the prototype with six elements made in 1932 for the architect’s house.

Portaluppi Milano Design
In the work registry, where Piero Portaluppi noted all of his professional obbligations throughout his career, out of the 877 entries, only four mention furniture and décor. The truth is, Portaluppi created many more plans for interiors and furniture – unique pieces, or limited edition pieces – realized by skilful artisans. Arbiter elegantiae of the bourgeoisie, for his clients Portaluppi designed wardrobes, armchairs, sofas, beds, chairs, tables, desks, lamps, and selected tapestries, pottery and artworks. Worth mentioning of the Milanese interiors we have the Sartori apartments (1933), Bassanini (1939), Diana (1940), Valerio (1946) and Gadda (1949). The most well-known and published are those of the Campiglio Necchi Villa (1932-35) and the Corbellini Wasssermann House (1934-36), as well as the Quintavalle Villa in Somma Lombardo (1934-36). Piero Portaluppi Milano Design launched the reproduction of some pieces of furniture that the architect designed during the 30’s and the 40’s. Highly qualified artisans, experts of the field, make all of the pieces of furniture, under the meticulous watch of the grandson, architect Piero Castellini. All pieces are marked and numbered under the Piero Portaluppi Foundation’s supervision, in such a manner to insure authentic and consistent devotion in the replicas.

- Modernist Dining Table In Ebonized Ash With Cherry Finish for Castellini HouseLocated in Milan, LombardyCreated for his daughter Luisa and his son-in-law Antonio Castellini, this table seems to be the prototype of that created, slight modiefied, two years later for the Corbellini Wasserman House. Absolutely symmetrical, the frame is made of five vertical elements, with four external elements that meet following a double-opposite Y scheme. The hollow circle element is typical of Portaluppi’s creations in the 1930s: from the gates to the Ina building in Diaz square in Milan, to the portholes in Portaluppi House and Villa Necchi Campiglio. Originally made in hickory briar-root, today it is available with a glass surface to preserve its frame. The frame is made in ebonized ash with cherry finishes...Category

- Pair of Modernist Chairs in Oak Wood for Oda Gadda HouseLocated in Milan, LombardyChair with a clear and simple design, created in 1949 for his cousin’s daughter, Oda Gadda’s house. In this chair yoy can see how Portaluppi leaves behind the elements that he loved in the 1930s (small arches, rods that shape bricks and diamonds) for the seatback, limiting it to just the frame, giving to the chair a look similar to the one of the seat shown by Ponti for the literature department of the University of Padova.
