Modernist Tray Holder or Side Table in Walnut for The Piero Portaluppi House

About the Item

Probably the only piece of furniture with a modular structure designed by Portaluppi: the tray holder is made of six cylindrical elements that turn on a central elliptic linchpin. Also called “i petali” (the petals) for the look it has, the tray holder was originally designed with nine elements. Our replica mimics the prototype with six elements made in 1932 for the architect’s house. Exhibitions: Piero Portaluppi. Linea errante nell’architettura del Novecento, Triennale di Milano, September 2003- January 2004. Da Portaluppi ai Castellini - Tre generazioni di progettisti d’interni, Spazio FMG Milano, March 2016. A small tag with the author's signature, the model and the progressive number is placed on all pieces of furniture of the Portaluppi Milano Design collection. Moreover, all pieces of furniture will have a certification of compliance to the original pieces provided by the Piero Portaluppi Milano foundation.

  • Modernist Dining Table In Ebonized Ash With Cherry Finish for Castellini House
    Located in Milan, Lombardy
Created for his daughter Luisa and his son-in-law Antonio Castellini, this table seems to be the prototype of that created, slight modiefied, two years later for the Corbellini Wasserman House. Absolutely symmetrical, the frame is made of five vertical elements, with four external elements that meet following a double-opposite Y scheme. The hollow circle element is typical of Portaluppi’s creations in the 1930s: from the gates to the Ina building in Diaz square in Milan, to the portholes in Portaluppi House and Villa Necchi Campiglio. Originally made in hickory briar-root, today it is available with a glass surface to preserve its frame. The frame is made in ebonized ash with cherry finishes...

    Located in Milan, Lombardy
Chair with a clear and simple design, created in 1949 for his cousin’s daughter, Oda Gadda’s house. In this chair yoy can see how Portaluppi leaves behind the elements that he loved in the 1930s (small arches, rods that shape bricks and diamonds) for the seatback, limiting it to just the frame, giving to the chair a look similar to the one of the seat shown by Ponti for the literature department of the University of Padova. Exhibitions: Fondazione Piero Portaluppi...

Portaluppi had created two of these upholstered sofas that catches the eye with its arches defining the seatback: one was made for his studio and the other one for the sundial niche of his apartment - the famous PPP house- in the Atellani House. Originally covered in satin, we now offer the choice of covering it in linen or chamois. Published in: G.P. [Gio Ponti], Studio d’architetto, in “Stile”, December 12th 1941, pp. 16-19.
