Jorge Zalszupin domino side tables L'Atelier Brazil 1959

About the Item

Rare pair of side tables from the 'Domino' series designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own factory L'Atelier, Brazil 1959. The language of the Domino line is geometric simplicity, suggesting modular combinations, like in a game of dominoes. On a single black iron frame the modules are topped with stunning brown/red rosewood patched tops. Really versatile tables, can be put together or separate, in a line or a-symmetrical. Could be used as nightstands, side tables or coffee tables when together. Beautiful minimal cubes with lines that play with light. Both light in appearance and weight. Kindly note that the tables are priced and sold in a set of 2. Literature: Jorge Zalszupin Modern Design in Brazil Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos 2014, page 172 Celebrated for his sleek designs, but yet very intriguing approach to form, Zalszupin’s work captivates a great part of the Modernist movement in Brasil. After graduating in architecture at the École des Beaux Arts in Bucharest, Romania in 1945, he moved to Paris where he didn’t find the opportunities he was hoping for. These series of events in war torn Europe, and led him to look for a new life abroad the European continent. Just as many other immigrants coming to the Americas from all over Europe seeking fortune, the young polish man originally from Warsaw, Poland named Jerzy Zalszupin was no exception. Arriving in Rio de Janeiro by ship in 1949, and determined to make his mark, he began working with another Polish architect called Luciano Korngold in São Paulo. After opening his Sao Paulo studio, called L’Atelier in 1951, Zalszupin mainly created furniture and a few residential projects. As time went by his label now called ‘Zalszupin’ gained, and later on became closely involved with Oscar Niemeyer’s vision for the new capital of Brasili, in which he had a great part in Niemeyer’s architectural commissions, furniture and interior designs. Read more…

This stunning trolley is probably the most iconic piece designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Carrinho de Chá or tea trolley originates from 1959 and is considered a timeless classic amongst collectors. The cart can be moved around freely and is built from various materials: a solid iron frame black painted, supports a large origami like bottom shelf. Another shelf sculpted out of solid jacaranda rosewood is placed on top and serves as a removable serving tray which can be used both sides. Two rather large but open brass wheels are placed at the bottom and are a great distinctive feature as the solid brass draws...
