Antique & Rustic Early 1800s Wooden Spanish Countryside Pay Table with Drawer

About the Item

Beautifully time-worn, antique, Southern European, chestnut wood end or side table. This relatively small size antique table is a joy to look at and the history of this kind of table makes it very interesting as well. Pay tables or paying tables were initially used by tax collectors and later in time (in the latter part of the middle ages), when most cities started to have their own currency, came the need for 'money exchangers'. A lot of the first money exchangers in 'early Netherlands' came from the Italian region of Lombardy and their name for these paying tables was 'banco'. Yes, it is this where also the English word 'bank' originates from. Pretty soon these money exchangers, who mainly serviced businessmen and travelers, also started 'safekeeping' and lending money. These tables therefor are at the very root of banking and just like some banks in this day and age, some of these earliest 'bankers' did not keep enough cash in their tables to be able to pay out when clients needed their money. This sometimes would lead to a lynching whereby the table of that particular money lender would be broken into pieces. The Italian word for such a broken table was 'banco rotto' and that actually and factually is where the Dutch word 'bankroet' and the English word 'bankruptcy' are derived from. This particular specimen from the early 1800s stands as strong and stabile as the day it was handcrafted, it is all but 'rotto' and the practical drawer with its unique front too is in very good condition. We do believe the inside of the drawer has at some point in time been replaced, because it looks to good (for the trained eye). Besides the wear that you would expect to see on an antique of this age and the multiple old woodworm holes (all inactive ofcourse) this table also has one leg/side that is 'leaning' to the inside a little. Mind you, by the time you are over 200 years old, you too will be leaning to the inside a little. It ofcourse gives this interesting and historical antique extra character and it is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed. If you appreciate the ancient beauty and if you like the historical significance of this small and interesting antique table then you will love our price. Especially when taken into account that our price even includes perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 workdays. Measures: Maximum width x height x depth: 18.8 x 17.3 x 17.3 inches. Width x depth x height of the inside of the drawer: 10.2 x 11.6 x 4 inches. We have a passion for the unique, for quality, for stylish yet practical and for craftsmanship of years gone by. • Large Antique Crucifix with a Hand Carved & Bronzed Wooden Corpus of Jesus 1800s
    Located in Lisse, NL
Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross. If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do. Our fair price for this one of a kind crucifix even includes perfect packing (in a custom made crate) and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 6 days. Maximum height x width x depth of the cross & corpus: 56 x 30.5 x 8 inches. Maximum height x width of the antique wooden corpus...
