About the Item

An early 19th century rosewood work table firmly attributed to Gillows. The table consists of finely figured rosewood veneers with a solid rosewood scrolling carved tray top gallery. The upper section with a discreet drawer at either end and a sliding tray which would have originally held a pleated silk sewing bag. ( this can be redone for you at no additional cost) The frieze & drawers decorated with figured cross grained veneers with split bead & reel applied turnings. The table is supported on turned end collum with additional cluster pillars supported on well carved cabriole legs with spade feet. The table still retains its original concealed brass castors. Further examples of similar tables & original Gillows drawings along with further literature are shown in the set of Gillows books by Susan E STUART. Images shows a similar model pictured on the front cover. The underside of one drawer bears the pencil inscription of J `Taylor . TAYLOR, JOHN (1) Is listed in the 1834-39 PL, P.274 (344/79). He may have been the `Taylor who made a mahogany bookcase in June 1847 (with Herbert) for Murray Esq, a customer of Ferguson & Co, and many other pieces illustrated in the ESBS including a satinwood cabinet in `Dec.

  • Late Regency 19th Century Gillows Oak Wine Table
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very good quality 19th century regency period oak wine table, or lamp table, attributed to gillows of lancaster, having shaped tray top with gadrooned, carved, decoration over moulded reverse tapering column with stylised lotus baluster and elegant swept tripod legs with foliate carved decoration. "Attributed To Gillows." This fine quality, charming little table follows a widely recognised design pattern which features in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Books for 16 July 1822, which refer to a "double round cornered top" and then appear again several times throughout the 1820's and 1830's. The designs are often referred to as "Flower Stands", or "Flower Tables" and there are various different itinerations to be found throuout the Regency and William IV periods. Constructed from charming, warm, rich oak veneers this little table is a great example. The carving is crisp and well executed and it retains a good colour and patina. It also remains in excellent condition and has clearly been well loved and well looked after throughout its history. The dimensions are great. Big enough to be practical and functional, but small enough to go just about anywhere around the home and serve a purpose as an antique lamp table, antique bedside table, antique wine table antique...
