Georgian Mahogany Circular Dumbwaiter

About the Item

A good quality mid-18th century chippendale period mahogany dumbwaiter having two well figured revolving circular tiers with moulded edge raised on elegant gun barrel turned central stem terminating on tripod legs with original concealed brass castors. Antique dumb waiters, sometimes referred to as buffet’s were made to be used in a dining room for storage of food, and sometimes drink, about to be served. Often these dumb waiters were made in pairs for large country houses and the first record of their use appears to be around the mid 18th century. After dinner, when the ladies retired to a different room the dumb waiters would be placed at either end of the table laden with drink so that the gentlemen could help themselves easily enough throughout the rest of the evening. This is a particularly nice, early example which is constructed from good quality, rich mahogany and has a simplistic elegance to the design. It is also a good functional size, without being overpoweringly large, resulting in its ability to be used as a practical, functional piece, in a whole host of places around the modern day home. Circa 1750. Measures: height 35.5 in. Top Tier Diameter 15 in. Bottom Tier Diameter 24 in.

A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Wine Table, Having Well Figured Circular Tilting Top Retaining Untouched Colour And Patina With Strung Decoration, Over Elegant Baluster Turned Column With Umbrella Tripod Legs. A simple, elegant and beautiful little table, which is also incredibly functional, this is of relatively typical design for the late 18th century georgian period. Boasting rich, dense, mahogany timbers, alongside a good untouched colour and patina, in combination with the subtle strung inlaid decoration to the edge of the top it has a real touch of class and exudes elegance. The perfect size for an absolute host of spaces around the home, it is both beautiful and practical. It would work just as well alongside a sofa or library chair in the living room to place a drinks glass on top of, as it would in the drawing room with a lamp perched atop, or even in the bedroom as a bedside table. • Georgian Mahogany Butlers Tray on Stand
    Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A good quality George III period mahogany oval butlers tray of panelled construction, having original brass hinges and pierced handles to folding sides, housed on later square leg mahogany stand. During the 18th and 19th centuries a coffee table was not what we regard as a coffee table in the 21st century. Coffee tables back then were always full height, effectively side tables. The modern, low, coffee table is really something which began to be seen during the early 20th century onwards. Based on the above there is a variety of different methods to incorporate a coffee table into an interior for people who wish to furnish their properties with genuine antique furniture, whilst still allowing for the practicalities and function which is required in modern times. Therefore as is now normal with by far the majority of these butlers trays which we see, due to the fact they make absolutely perfect coffee tables, this has been removed from its original, tall, folding stand at some point and fitted onto a lower, more practical and sturdy stand constructed from old antique wood. It's worth noting that generally this means an old broken table...
