English George III Mahogany Antique Pie Crust Tea Table, 18th Century

About the Item

A profusely and handsomely carved piece, this beautiful George III tea table is highly developed and most striking. The pie crust is painstakingly formed by first affixing to a lathe, carefully turning until the rim becomes raised, scroll cutting the beautiful undulating edge and then hand carving the concave edge molding. It is a gorgeous result, the entire top cut from a single incredibly large solid plank of mahogany. As noted in the condition below, we believe the top to be replaced, though it could simply have been rotated as the cleat screws wore out over time - please review the images and form your own opinion prior to purchasing, though we have priced it according to the assumption that it is a period replacement. The top tilts and rotates with the birdcage box, this with a turned pillar at each of the four corners. It allows the top to easily be lifted free of the base by simply removing the tiny wedge tenon. Deep stop-fluting along the pillar is completed with ring turning above and below, the lower ring finely hand carved over the three cabriole legs that join the base in a deep tenon. This is a bit atypical, most legs joining this type of table with large dovetailing from beneath - however, it has been a quite effective joint, each leg free of any splitting or cracking that often accompanies the dovetail, the original hand forged iron bracket still locking the bottom of each leg into the base from beneath. Gorgeous and crisp acanthus carvings flow down each knee and are completed in the foliate carved feet. For the collector passionate about pieces of the period but unconcerned about absolute purity in a piece, this is a very fine acquisition with beautiful patina throughout that is priced at a very healthy discount over a pure piece of similar embellishment. It is a most striking presentation piece. Measurements: Top diameter 29 1/8” x 29 3/8”; 45 5/8” H when vertical, 29 3/4” H when horizontal; approximately 25” W from toe to toe Condition Report: Top is likely from a different table, as cleats are replaced and old scars show prior cleat placement and birdcage rubbing; however, color and age are identical to the pedestal so it is possible the top was simply rotated as the holes for the cleats wore out. Top with three diamond patches, several old plugs and surface wear/discoloration. Pad added under one foot. Old crack to top of pedestal. Original iron bracket to underside.
