About the Item

This is an exquisite antique Sheraton Revival satinwood and polychrome decorated kidney shaped dressing table, c.1890 in date. The top is hand painted with a central panel of a musician playing to a group of people with ribbon tied swags of flowers. It has three useful frieze drawers. It is finished on all sides so it can stand freely in the centre of a room. The desk stands on original brass castors and has its original handles. The quality of the work is truly breathtaking. Dimensions in cm: Height 68 x Width 101 x Depth 57 Dimensions in inches: Height 26.8 x Width 39.8 x Depth 22.4 Satinwood is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia. The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. West Indian satinwood, sometimes called yellow wood, is considered superior. It is the golden yellow, lustrous, even-grained wood found in the Florida Keys and the West Indies. It has long been valued for furniture. It is also used for musical instruments, veneers, and other purposes. Satinwood is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Sapindales, family Rutaceae. Newby Hall is an eighteenth-century country house situated on the banks of the River Ure at Skelton-on-Ure, near Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire, England, and is a Grade I listed building. The house contains a collection of furniture, painting and precious artefacts. The River Ure runs along the south side of the grounds, which have extensive herbaceous borders and woodland walks. The Georgian stable block, leased as offices, is also Grade I listed. The present owners, the Compton family, descended from William Weddell, have restored the property.
