X6377 PORTRAIT OF THE IRONSHIP, ANTELOPE LEAVING THE RIVER MERSEY ON HER MAIDEN VOYAGE SAMUEL WALTERS 1811-1882 Oil on canvas 26 x 40 inches Framed size 32 ¼ x 46 ¼ inches Samuel Walters was born on a sea passage from Bideford to London on 1st November 1811. He was the son of Miles Walters who may have instructed him and encouraged him to exhibit as soon as possible which probably assisted his admission to the Liverpool Academy Schools in December 1831 where he became a member in 1841. He first painted portraits and assisted his father but by 1834 he had set up as a marine painter with a studio in his father’s picture-framing premises. In 1845 he moved his family to London but this was not a success and he returned to Liverpool where he pros pered by capitalizing on the city’s great shipping boom. His patrons were often Liverpool and American ship owners. Although he might be regarded as just another ship portraitist, he was rather more than that, having paintings accepted for hanging at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1861 many of these were general coastal subjects. He also exhibited at the British Institution and Suffolk Street. Walters died in Bootle on 5 March 1882. Works in Public Collections: Royal Academy, Greenwich, Manx Museum, Liverpool Museum, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Liverpool Academy of Arts, Society of Fine Arts, British Institute, Suffolk Street Bibl: Dictionary of Sea Painters Archibald Dictionary of British Marine Painters – Arnold Wilson Marine Art & Liverpool – AS Davidson X6377 A PORTRAIT OF THE IRON SHIP, ANTELOPE OFF THE ISLE OF ANGLESEY SAMUEL WALTERS (1811-1882) Oil on canvas 26 x 40 inches The S.S Antelope was built of iron and designed by the eminent and revolutionary marine architect John Grantham. Built in 1846 by Messrs Hodgson & Co in Liverpool for H. McTear & Co she was an advanced design. At launch, she is recorded at 606 tons 185.7 ft in length by 24.7 ft wide and 16.7 ft in depth. This most interesting portrait shows her in original launch form, described as an auxiliary iron steamer. Believed at the time, to be a single boiler twin-engine screw propeller format. The canted funnel and steam escape pipes are a most unusual being recorded on only one other ship. The canted funnel seams to be for the avoidance of sparks catching dry sail but this may not have worked effectively as in 1849 she is recorded as having the machinery removed. She remained under sail only until 1853 when she was bought by Messer’s Miller & Thomson of Liverpool who sent her to John Lairds of Birkenhead for an extensive refit. This included lengthening by 41 ft between the fore and main masts and the refitting of twin engines and screw propellers. Antelope now weighed in at 778 tons and was painted again by Sam Walters in her new form, which was published, in the Illustrated London News in 1853. Shortly after this she was renamed ‘Coral Queen’. After this her history is slightly confused as it seems that she changed hands several times more, from Miller and Thompson to the Atlantic Royal Mail SM Co and then to A. Ludders a German Co and possibly back to Atlantic Royal Mail. It is said that she finally sank off Hartlepool after a collision with the S.S Brino in 1890. This painting is a significant discovery of the ship as she was built and most likely depicted on her maiden voyage to Brazil (by the flag on the foretruck). It is the only known depiction of the ship in her unique original design.
