A Decorative Pair of Baroque Style Marriage Portraits, Continental Circa 1900
About the Item
A highly decorative pair of hand painted marriage portraits depicting a man & woman in 17th century courtly attire.
Both figures shown surrounded by flowering vines - he surrounded by a vine of flowering violets, she surrounded by a vine of flowering bougainvillea – both flowers are considered to be symbolic of love, affection & marriage.
He is shown holding a tethered walking stick in one hand, with a money purse or gloves in the opposing, she is shown making a hand gesture with the thumb & forefinger ‘kissing’ - a sign symbolic of love & marriage.
Both are mounted within highly decorative faux tortoiseshell & verre eglomise glass surrounds, showing both gilt & silvered foliate motifs, set within architectural giltwood frames.
Despite the frames being in less than pristine condition, they nonetheless retain an elevated degree of old-world, albeit worn charm.
