Dorothy Clough Swedish Upsala-Ekeby Horses Wall Plaque

About the Item

Dorothy Clough (British, b.1930) was born and grew up in the United Kingdom and attended Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland between 1948-53. With the help of a travel scholarship, she moved to Sweden in 1954, receiving an internship at the Gefle Porcelain Factory and a year later was hired as a designer at the Upsala-Ekeby factory. She is very well known for her figurative work both of people and animals and was one of the representatives of the illustrious Swedish ceramic designs of the 20th Century. This stunning Swedish plaque with horses made at Upsala-Ekeby is a wonderful example of the work of Dorothy Clough (British, b.1930) and was made in 1970. The landscape shaped rectangular ceramic plaque is carved in relief and depicts seven horses prancing or galloping, all of varying size and form. The horses appear to have a polished grey roughcast finish which is contrasted against a textured ground with a high glazed black finish which extends over the edges of the plaque. The plaque has molded initials DC for Dorothy Clough to the lower right corner with Upsala-Ekeby factory marks to the base along with an original maker’s paper label attached to the edge of the plaque. The plaque is fitted with a metal hanging loop. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
