Giovanni Petucco Italy Ceramic Wall Tile of Woman on a Horse, 1950s

About the Item

This gorgeous rare glazed polychrome ceramic or terracotta wall tile was created by listed Italian ceramicist Giovanni Petucco (Italian, 1910 – 1961). The decorative wall-mounted plaque in a typical Mid-Century-Modern design features black, blue, beige, and blood-orange glazes. The wall panel depicts a woman riding bareback on a horse in a side-saddle position. The underside of the panel has an engraving that reads "Italy 17/103-B," which appears to be handwritten. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner. The artist used this type of under-the-glaze handwritten signature between 1946 and 1950. The plaque is in overall excellent vintage condition, with minor wear on the glaze but no chip, crack, or repair. Measurements: 12.19 in wide (31 cm) x 17.32 in high (44 cm) x 0.63 in thick (1.5 cm). Note: Ambiance pictures might not have the exact size of the panel. About: PETUCCO & TOLIO was founded in 1945 by the partners Giovanni Petucco (1910-1961), Andrea Tolio, and Gino Cuman in Nove, Italy, in the province of Vicenza, with headquarters via Molini 44. Under Giovanni Petucco's direction, the production program consisted predominantly of vases, ornaments, and bases for lamps. The company's specialty was the production of interesting decorative panels in traditional and modern styles. Giovanni Petucco also produced many one-of-a-kind works in the furnaces of Petucco & Tolio, presented on multiple occasions at the Venice Biennale (1948 and 1956), the Milan Triennale, and the National Exhibition of Ceramics in Vicenza (1949 and 1961). Over the years, the factory has also exhibited abroad, in Sweden, Finland, France, and Germany. From the early 1960s until 1970, Floriano Gheno worked among the various employees of the manufacturer as an apprentice before setting out to open his workshop. After the death of Giovanni Petucco in 1961, his son Giambattista took over the reins of the company and continued in his father's footsteps, but the company finally closed around 1980.
