Large Japanese Framed Handcrafted Traditional Silk Beanbag Decorative Art
About the Item
Unique Japanese framed handcrafted oshie decorative art showcasing traditional Japanese beanbags or otedama using strips of antique Japanese silk fabric in various colorful patterns sewn together in a specific way. It recreates a generic Japanese painting of Edo period. Otedama was brought to Japan from China in Nara period. It is filled with azuki beans or rice and a game played with otedama with complicated rules was very popular in Edo and Meiji periods among Japanese girls and girls can still be seen playing with these colorful handmade beanbags in Japan.
A traditional Japanese handcrafted decorative art form using high quality silk and brocade fabrics, known as oshie (literally, “pressed pictures”) has been used to create this magnificent piece. Oshie resembles a carefully crafted jigsaw puzzle consisting of numerous pieces of kimono fabric padded with slightly varying thickness of cotton and painstakingly glued and ironed together to create an incredible three-dimensional picture. In the final process, the details are accentuated by painting and shading, and facial features are painted in miniature-like exactitude.
This series conveys the beauty and sensibility that the history of Japan reflects and at the same time enhance contemporary living spaces.
