Oceanic Vintage Shield, Tribal Wall Art, Papua New Guinea, Late 19th Century

About the Item

A large decorative and rare hand carved tribal war shield in traditional colors, made in Papua New Guinea in the late 19th century. Functional as beautiful wall art. This piece remains in a really good vintage condition. This shield probably comes from the Faiwol area south of Telefomin. Here the designs are a bit looser and less rigid aesthetically than their northern neighbors in the Telefomin Valley. While there is still a strong geometric composition to this shield, the edges are a bit rounded, more organic and the four spirals give it a figurative element.
