Painted Ski Montana History Scapula

About the Item

Painted in the old style vintage steer or buffalo scapula painted by Gordon R. (Buzz) Adolfson, February 26, 1977. One side showing a big horn ram with signature and date, the other the first tri-seat ski lift noting Showdown, Montana. Montana's oldest natural snow ski resort opening in 1936. The triple chair was installed in 1977 "Buzz" Adolfson was a forest service employee at the time. Obviously this was a gift to a friend. On the end noted "May God be with you and your family. With Love, Buzz." Printed in an early style similar to other scapula's we have seen painted by Joseph Sharp.   • Circa 1900 Salish Totem
    Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
    This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker.
