Pair 18th Century English Creamware Wall Pockets Made circa 1790

About the Item

This pair of 18th-century English creamware wall pockets is hand-painted in the neoclassical style. An identical pair can be found in the collection of The V & A Museum, item numbers 414:1166-1885 and 414:1166/A-1885. Both pieces came to The V & A Museum from the collection of Lady Charlotte Schreiber (1812-1895), an English aristocrat who was a patroness of arts and a well-known Victorian collector of porcelain. We see a boy holding a flaming brazier of fire in high relief, emblematic of winter, a quiver at his side. The other wall pocket represents autumn. Both very likely made at Leeds Pottery, but unmarked. Dimensions: 10" tall x 6" wide x 2.5" deep" Condition: Excellent Price: $1,750. An identical pair is also found in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Kansas City, Missouri collection. The illustration on page 104 of Prattware by J & G Lewis shows this pair of wall pockets holding dried flowers. The description says, "A boy holding a flaming brazier of fire in high relief, emblematic of winter, a quiver at his side. The other wall pocket represents autumn. Both possibly made at Leeds Pottery, but unmarked." Wall pockets look beautiful, flanking a painting or a gold leaf mirror. When decorating the space on either side of a mirror or painting, using a pair of wall pockets is unexpected.

Creamware was first produced in England sometime before 1740. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware in the Staffordshire Potteries was Thomas Whieldon. The young Josiah Wedgwood partnered with Thomas Whieldon from 1754-1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to developing creamware. Around the same time, in the mid-18th century, French potters developed their creamware known in France as "Faience Fine...
