Pair of contemporary floral plaster panels in Baroque style by a Master artist
About the Item
Pair of decorative 'Flower Garden' panels in plaster by British Master craftsman Geoffrey Preston MBE. The designs for these spring from a series of drawings in one of the artist's sketchbooks. The decoration was modelled in clay onto a clay base, using fingers, thumbs and small boxwood tools. The clay base enabled Preston to draw into the background, as well as build up from it, which gives a greater depth and emphasis to the modelling. A silicon mould was made from the completed models, and from this plaster casts can be taken. He uses Herculite No 2 plaster with burlap (hessian) and timber lathes to reinforce. Each pair is cast to order and signed and numbered on the reverse.
The 'Flower Garden' panels are original works. Preston's aim is to use the fluid character of clay to make poetry in light and shadow in plaster. There is a strong influence of flowers and plant forms in his work, often in the context of architectural elements. He is conscious of proportion and the language of gesture, which is demonstrated in the flowing nature and harmony evident in his work.
Geoffrey Preston MBE is a Master of traditional plaster-relief techniques who draws on eighteenth-century decorative art and sculpture, but combines it with his contemporary eye for design. He cites Giacomo Serpotta of Sicily and Egid Qurin Asam of Bavaria as two of the greatest influences on his work, both of whom stretched the boundaries of what people thought possible to sculpt in plaster during the Late Baroque period. In addition, he admires painter Rex Whistler and wood engravers, Charles Tunnicliffe and Joan Hassall, for their mastery of light and shade, which echoes the effects he strives to achieve within his own work.
While Preston has previously been commissioned for restoration projects in many great country houses of Britain and Ireland – he led the conservation of the stucco when Uppark House, West Sussex was almost destroyed by fire – he prefers not to replicate exactly what was there before, instead incorporating favourite birds, flowers or motifs of his clients in order to continue the personal narrative of the building. He also happily accepts contemporary architectural commissions, such as the Bar and Lounge of The Goring Hotel in London, where he and his small team created a wall of high-relief, sculptural plasterwork depicting mythical sea creatures and marine life – the latter inspired by the work of nineteenth-century zoologist and artist, Ernst Haeckel. For the re-launch of Annabel’s club in Mayfair in 2018, Preston created a horse-size Flying Unicorn that hangs over the club’s stairwell.

Embroidered velvet ottoman in a variety of textiles by award-winning artist
By Jacky Puzey
Located in London, GB
The 'Peacock and Squirrel Ottoman' by award-winning, British embroidery artist and designer, Jacky Puzey. This piece is lavishly upholstered with embroidered velvet and appliqué work of silk organza, faux fur and peacock feathers. It is constructed on a wooden frame with brass wheels and comes with a similarly maximalist bolster cushion. As each piece within the edition is made to commission, uniquely bespoke touches are possible (although these may impact the list price quoted).
Jacky Puzey creates statement furniture akin to richly textured artworks, combining a material palette of velvet, silk, faux fur, feathers, tweed, silk and organza with digital and hand embroidery. The animal kingdom is a constant source of inspiration, with designs that include ravens, hares, squirrels, koi carp, parakeets and peacocks. Her work may reference seventeenth-century allegorical still life paintings and eighteenth-century chinoiserie, but she also encompasses urban themes, such as London’s parakeets and the leopards that roam free in Mumbai’s suburbs. Puzey's work has been commissioned for HBO ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘House of the Dragon...

Contemporary hand-sewn Curllusion quilt by British master maker
By Emily Campbell
Located in London, GB
'Curllusion' quilt in Blanc de Vert colourway by British artist-maker, Emily Campbell. Emily’s knowledge of sewing combines with the formal and visual principles she learned as a two-dimensional designer to re-imagine the patchwork quilt. She has interpreted traditional patchwork geometry, dispensing with floral prints in favour of bold combinations of solid colour. Emily quilts all her designs for us by hand. Bespoke sizes are therefore possible.
An accomplished undergraduate dress and costume maker, Emily progressed from an English degree to a diploma in Clothing Technology and became a pattern maker for the fashion designer Jean Muir. After completing her Master of Fine Arts at Yale School of Art she practised as a graphic designer at Pentagram in New York before embarking on a series of national and international programme director roles in the arts, design and education.
In 2012, a quilt made from old denim and canvas work clothes featured in an exhibition about Gee’s Bend (the famed quilting community in Alabama). This prompted Emily to up-cycle the family’s old jeans into her first patchwork quilt. She studied rhythm, rule and variation in Anni Albers’ pattern drawings. She took inspiration from Gustav Klimt, Victor Pasmore and Ellsworth Kelly, and many more artists besides. Emily is the founder of Pemberton Qwilts. This takes its name from Sheila Frances Hayes, née Pemberton, who first taught Emily to sew.
Three of Emily’s ‘TV Quilts’ were commissioned by Anya Hindmarch for her concept store at London Fashion Week 2023. These bear a single word of personal significance (see images). Emily was also among the textile artists selected for a group show at David Parr House, Cambridge that year.
