"Design for 1925 Art Deco Expo Pavilion, " Extraordinary Architectural Rendering

About the Item

Although Herbert Hoover did not support the presence of a pavilion for the United States at the famed Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, in English), which has given the Art Deco style its name, there was enormous interest in the new and modern styles promulgated at the fair, and the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that it was a mistake for America to be absent. Many hundreds of architects and designers did attend, however, and designs were made for the US pavilion that was never built, including this extraordinary design by Luther Lashmit when he was a student at the Fontainebleau Ecole des Beaux Arts. The symmetry and form of this proposed design shows the clear influence of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but all the decorative elements, flying buttresses at the terrace level, and lighting fixtures are very new and au courant. Lashmit later became an important presence and partner at the firm of Northup and O’Brien in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, later renamed Lashmit, James, Brown and Pollock. This drawing is superbly executed in ink and watercolor, and is beautifully framed. (Dimensions include frame.)
