About the Item

A set of four rare etchings by Robert Edmond Jones (American, 1887-1954), the renowned set designer and artist, here representing Shakespeare's play Hamlet for John Barrymore, one of his most regarded. One very rare hand colored piece with a dedication to Ruth Hapgood, 1916. The drawings are remarked upon in an Autobiography by Actress legend Ethel Barrymore in which she comments on a young Ruth Hapgood being present in her thespian circle: "I found out after we were rehearsing it that Jane Cowl was going to do it and told Arthur Hopkins that I didn't want to do it, but he insisted on going on with it, partly because Robert Edmond Jones had already made sketches for the sets. His obstinacy was the immovable object tenfold and quite impossible to overcome." The Encyclopedia Britannica has this to say of his life: Robert Edmond Jones 1887-1954, American scene designer, b. Milton, N.H. With his design in 1915 for The Man Who Married a Dumb Wife, a new era of scene design began in the United States. His use of color and dramatic lighting enhanced his imaginative sets. Some of Jones's most notable designs were for Macbeth, Richard III, Hamlet (for John Barrymore), and The Green Pastures. After work with the Washington Square Players, he joined Kenneth Macgowan at the Greenwich Village Theatre; working in conjunction with the Provincetown Players, he created sets for the plays of Eugene O'Neill. Jones did the designing for the early three-color-process film La Cucaracha (1933). He wrote Drawings for the Theatre (1925), The Dramatic Imagination (1941), and, with Kenneth Macgowan, Continental Stagecraft (1922). Note in the portrait of Jones there is an image of a version of these drawings.
