Study of Eagles by Jean-Baptiste Oudry

About the Item

One of the foremost animal and landscape artists of the first half of the eighteenth century in France, Jean-Baptiste Oudry was trained by his father and Michel Serre before entering the studio of Nicolas de Largillière circa 1705. There, he studied the art of portraiture for approximately five years. During this period, Oudry also attended drawing courses at the Académie Royale and the Académie de Saint-Luc, where he became a member in 1708. Portraits in the style of Largillière dominate his early work, but he also began to experiment with landscapes a well as trompe l’oeil and Commedia dell’Arte subjects. By the time Oudry was received as a painter at the Académie Royale, in 1719, his skill at rendering still lifes was evident; the central allegorical figure in his presentation piece, Abundance with her Attributes, now at Versailles, is surrounded by brilliantly painted animals, fruit and vegetables.

In the 1720s, Oudry established himself as a hunt and game specialist, which included animal portraiture, winning away from Desportes many of Louis XV’s most important commissions. This royal patronage led to Oudry’s activity, in the 1730s, as a designer of tapestries, again dominated by hunt themes for the Gobelins and Beauvais manufactories. He was appointed director of Beauvais in 1734. Aside from the patronage of Louis XV, Oudry also won the favor of other important members of the French court as well as the kings of Denmark and Sweden. Exhibiting his work regularly at the Salon from 1737 to 1753, Oudry continued to produce brilliantly painted animal studies, hunt scenes and still lifes until the end of his career.

This drawing of eagles in flight is obviously a product of his keen observation of birds in flight and rendered with a real understanding of movement. His interest in animals and birds was paramount and the eagles shown here are an accurate example.
