1783 Oil on Canvas Painting of "Major Charles Savage" in Redcoat Army Uniform

About the Item

A late 18th century oil on canvas painting of a British Army officer, “Major Charles Savage”. In this half-length portrait the officer is wearing the traditional redcoat uniform of the British Army against a neutral backdrop. Dark blue facing on the lapels and gilded loops and buttons frame his frilled cravat while a gold-threaded epaulette, a mark of military distinction, adorns his right shoulder. The viewer is drawn towards the painting by the penetrating gaze of the sitter and his dignified look, enhanced by his formal wig. Inscribed in the top left hand corner, the painter has captured a prominent upper class man in this commissioned portrait, a coveted symbol of wealth and status. Set within an 18th century period rosewood frame, this portrait of Major Charles Savage dated 1783, with its fine, colorful details and traditional subject, could bring a definite sense of history to any room.
