French school, 18th century Portrait of a gentleman Oil on canvas, 91.5 x 65 cm - with frame, 96 x 70.5 x 4.5 cm On the cartouche, à Monsieur Garran - Bra (?) A princely characteristic of celebratory portraits, the elegance expressed by the present stands out for the delicate and sober elegance with which the gentleman imposes himself on the viewer. The refined pictorial thickness, made up of minutes and countless shades, returns a realistic portrait that is exceptionally truthful: it is enough to appreciate, in this regard, the shadow on the man's upper lip, announcing a fresh shave. The polite gaze is combined with the class pose chosen by the artist, with one canonical hand in the pocket of the right body and the other holding a scroll on which it is possible to confirm the identity of the nobleman, Monsieur Garran. The artist's name, on the other hand, is deliberately concealed, to a small extent, by the hand of the portrait; it is possible to justify this choice with the fame received at the time by the painter, whose name must have been immediately guessed from the first letters reported, probably Bra. The orange sand frock coat provides a concrete post quem for the painting, having been a garment introduced in European countries from England in the 18th century; it is made with a high collar and embellished with a rhythmic series of flat buttons that embellish the sleeves at the wrists. The right body is a bright light cobalt, almost in satin, on the top of which sprinkles a soft jabeau, of candid white like the shirt. The artist's brush, of a declared French school, thus embellishes the variegated corpus of noble portraiture by means of a brilliant example of rare intensity.
