Jane Berlandina untitled Venetian street scene circa 1930s watercolor on paper, mounted on board 18 x 22 inches Jane Berlandina, a painter, muralist, lecturer, and set designer for the San Francisco Opera House was a highly visible artist in San Francisco in the early 20th Century. She was especially known for her modernist watercolors and for her depression-era, WPA murals that went against the grain of the prevalent American-Scene style. Among her best known works is the 1934 mural, "Home Life," which she painted in Coit Tower in San Francisco, and which showed the influence of Raoul Dufy, one of her best known teachers. It stands out against the other murals in that important WPA project, which reflect the theatrical, highly political social realism of Diego Rivera, who was frequently present in San Francisco at that time. Berlandina was born in Nice, France, and studied at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. She first went to New York, where her watercolors were heralded for being "rapidly executed with jarring colors in unexpected juxtapositions. A favorite combination was burnt orange against electric blue—which seemed to manifest the push-pull theories that Hans Hofmann would later make famous." Berlandina arrived in California in 1931 after her marriage to architect Henry Howard, a scion of the influential Howard Family of artists and architects, which included John Howard, the master architect of UC Berkeley, John Howard Jr., the muralist, Charles Howard the surrealist, Adeline Kent, Madge Knight, and others. In California, Berlandina was a member of the San Francisco Art Association and the Society of Women Artists.
