About the Item

Exquisite 1933 Art Deco male men nude portrait oil painting by Austrian artist, Olga von Mossig-Zupan (1900-1992). The oil painting is on un-stretched canvas and depicts the study of a nude young male signed and dated by the artist, Olga Mossig Zupan, 1933. Olga von Mossig-Zupan was married to Fritz Theobald Georg von Mossig, who was the brother of Tatjana von Mossig. Tatjana was involved in the scandal with Egon Schiele who was accused in April 1912 and arrested on charges of ‘offenses against public morality’ and ‘seduction’ of one of his underage models. Although that charge was ultimately dropped, he spent 24 days in prison, condemned for the indecency of his work. Few artists have been so starkly Frank in their exploration of sexuality or so dangerously close to straining taboo to breaking point. Despite his short life, Schiele’s work was crucial to the development of Austrian Expressionism. His aesthetic was a huge influence on contemporaries including Kokoschka; his work also directly influenced artists in generations to come, such as Francis Bacon, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Tracy Emin, whose work was shown alongside Schiele’s at Vienna’s Leopold Museum in 2015. The expressionist energy of the early 20th century is very much evident in this portrait of a young male by Olga von Mossig-Zupan. We have been fortunate enough to discover this rare portfolio of altogether five canvases which we offer each individually or as an original group of five. Upon request, we gladly can provide the canvases on stretcher bars and being framed to the client’s specifications.
