19th Century Florence View Painting Pallmann Oil Paint

About the Item

Peter Götz Pallmann (Berlin, 1908 - 1966) Santa Trìnita bridge in Florence Oil on canvas applied to wood, 35 x 40 cm Frame 45.5 x 50.5 cm Signed P. Götz Pallmann lower right. The fascinating painting in question is signed by the German artist Peter Pallmann, born in Berlin in 1908. We find depicted a view of Florence with the Santa Trìnita bridge. The bridge, which connects piazza Santa Trinita to piazza de 'Frescobaldi, was built in 1252, taking its name from the nearby church of the Santa Trinita. After various collapses and rebuilds in 1557 the shape of the present structure was defined. The design, commissioned by Cosimo I, was entrusted to Bartolomeo Ammannati, based on a design by Michelangelo, who suggested the modern line of the three arches. This curved line is an innovation that anticipates the fashion of the Baroque. The construction, which took place between 1567 and 1571, ended with four allegorical statues, depicting the seasons, to decorate the corners placed in 1608; are the work of Pietro Francavilla (Spring), Taddeo Landini (Winter) and Giovanni Caccini (Summer and Autumn). Destroyed by the retreating Germans in 1944, it was rebuilt on the initiative of the Florentine antique dealer Luigi Bellini. In 1952 the architect Riccardo Gizdulich was called to supervise the reconstruction works, together with the engineer Emilio Brizzi. The four statues were fished out of the Arno. From the bridge, as in this lively view, you can see the dome of the church of San Frediano in Cestello. The painter animates the scene with a fast coming and going of characters, a carriage and a dog, giving vitality and freshness to the view, from which you can breathe a moment of Florence's past.
