19th Century Large Mountain Landscape with Village by German Ed Cohen 1866

A 19th century large oil on canvas painting, a mountain landscape signed and dated on the lower right Ed.Cohen Weimer, 1866, depicting a beautiful mountain landscape, an Italian Alps mountain valley with a stream, rustics and architectural elements of a mountain village in the background. The European artist Edvard Cohen, (1838-1910), German painter from Hannover, studied at the Academy of Vienna and Dresden. The foreground is animated by figures carrying out daily activities and amusing details, such as boys playing a game of bowls besides a fountain, figures and animals. Scenes of peasants drinking and resting in villages were a popular theme in the Flemish antique painting and European countries. Signs of excess, drinking were often incorporated in villages and landscape compositions. Contrasting the bright sky, various shades of bluish-white to dark green of deep vegetation. Within a French gilt gesso and gilt-wood frame, measuring 98 x 126 centimeters, this oil on canvas work is in good condition, lined and comes from a private collection in Lombardy. Canvas size only measures 72 x 99 cm. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti.
