"America, Old and New", Mural Painting W/ Industrial Scene, George Browne, 1926

About the Item

Painted a decade before the start of the Works Progress Administration, but presaging its fascination with the growth and development of the American scene, this large mural study was painted by George Elmer Browne in 1926. Like the Social Realism paintings of the 1930s and 40s, this impressive scene juxtaposes historic figures from America's earlier days -- including Davy Crockett in his coonskin hat and deerskin coat, top hatted gentlemen, and Native Americans with feathers in their hair -- with a modern industrial scene with rows of blast furnaces in the background. Browne has painted the scene in a rich array of purples, greens and golden yellow, giving it great depth. Browne was born in New England, studied in Boston and Paris, and settled in New York City, where he became known for his Impressionist style. This scene is a special case in his oeuvre, and an important example of American mural painting. The painting is oil on board, and includes a hand-painted border, no doubt by Browne. The reverse indicates that Browne filed to copyright the painting in 1926.
