This vase is meant to be seen in a Museum by tens of thousands of people! Definitely done by the hands of Paul Nicolas in his D’Argental Studio, circa 1920 as a class Art Nouveau - Art Deco transition landscape piece. Two oval framed beautifully acid etched cameo scenes of mountains. Lakes and trees make this vase timeless rare and very important as possibly no other ones exist! The principal blue color permeates through the clouds, the snow and the icy lake waters. Browns and purples make up the mountains and trees. The piece illustrates a picturesque little street in the impressionist style, and is signed in the lower right corner "A. Thieme," the signature of Anthony Thieme (1888–1954). The painting shows a little road lined with houses and large trees, with people milling around on the street and the porches of the houses. The early 20th-century painting is in excellent condition with rich, vibrant colors; throughout the piece, the viewer gets a sense of the artist's expertise in the rendering of space, light and a beautifully hazy atmosphere, as he was referred to "The Master of Light and Shadow". Anthony Johannes Thieme was born in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam in 1888. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, at the Royal Academy at the Hague, as an apprentice to George Hoecker, a well known stage designer in Düsseldorf, Germany, and to Antonio Mancini, an Italian Impressionist. After completing his studies, Thieme journeyed throughout Europe and South America, working in stage design to support his travels. Thieme first came to the United States in 1917 and initially worked as a set designer and book illustrator first in New York and later in Boston.
