About the Item

This is a beautiful large antique oil on canvas landscape painting by Thomas Henry Gibb (1833-1893), titled 'Taking The Heights' signed lower left T. H. Gibb 1884 and inscribed 'Alnwick' and dated on the reverse. The painting features the mist lifting while a large herd of red deer ascend the steep ridges of the Cheviot Hills in Alnwick, Northumberland. Gibb's landscape painting achieves a believable and compelling portrayal of the natural world, an achievement typifying the 19th-century artists drive in the portrayal of nature. The artist has captured the dramatic beauty of the Cheviot Hills with this superb painting. Housed in its original richly carved giltwood frame decorated with ancanthus leaves and a Greek key border. He was the father of the other well-known artist H.W. Phelan Gibb 1870-1948. He exhibited in the 1880s at the Arthur Tooth Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
