About the Item

This is a beautiful Dutch pair of antique oil on panel paintings of marine scenes, signed and dated 1887, Peter Cornelius Dommersen (1834-1908) with wax seals verso. One paintings depdict a rowing and sailing boats at sea, the other country folk on a beach with sailing boats out at sea. The artist has used a very delicate palette of colours and has succeeded in adding some mystery to the scene. Housed in their original and beautiful giltwood frames. Dimensions in cm: Height 23 x Width 28 x Depth 4 - Frame Height 15 x Width 20 - Canvas Dimensions in inches: Height 9 inches x Width 11 inches x Depth 2 inches - Frame Height 6 inches x Width 8 inches - Canvas Bibliography Peter Cornelius Dommersen was a specialist in sea, land and river-scapes as during the 19th century there seems to have been a revival of this type of art. He travelled and painted in America, Belgium, The Netherlands, Britain and France just like his countryman Abraham Hulk Senior did and also settled in the end in the United Kingdom. He often travelled together with his brother Cornelius Christiaan Dommersen and his son William Raymond Dommersen. He died in Hexham in the last quarter of 1908 as Peter C. Dommershuizen and was buried as Peter Cornelius Dommerverschingen on 18 November 1908 in Haydon Bridge which is recorded by Tim Williams on the Hexham Local History Society forum. His wife Anna Dommerson was buried there on 2 March 1908 and the address for both of them is given as Hadrian Bungalow, Hexham. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artist, the Suffolk Street Galleries and the British Institution. Our reference: A2954
