"Bathers at the Shore, " Art Deco Painting of Swimmers by Karfunkle

About the Item

Beautifully painted in muted tones of honey, soft blue and dusty pink, this evocative painting from the 1930s depicts two nude and semi-nude female figures along the seashore, framing a pair of men in swimsuits clambering over rocks in the distance. The painter was David Karfunkle, who was born in Austria, moved to America, and became known for his idyllic and allegorical paintings of gods and goddesses in pastoral settings. This very modern scene, complete with a sailboat on the sea, is unusual in his oeuvre. The painting is oil on canvas stretched over board. The frame may be original. (Dimensions include frame; painting itself is 27 inches high by 19.5 inches wide.)

  • "Shore Leave, " Large Art Deco Mural with Sailors at New Orleans Brothel, 1940s
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most striking and remarkable Art Deco paintings we have ever offered, this depiction of a group of 1940s sailors visiting a New Orleans brothel is full of boisterous energy and strong color, providing an amused and amusing view of Navy life during or after World War II. The sailors -- in their tight white pants and youthful swagger -- are enjoying the company of an array of brothel workers, reigned over by a madam dressed in ruby red, with two young paramours to her side. Taking it all in is a group of jeering young men in straw hats to the right, and a young gay...
