"Bedouin, " Striking Art Deco Painting by Stahlhut, NY World's Fair Poster Artist

About the Item

Striking and handsome, this depiction of a Bedouin in his traditional robe has the color and intensity one would associate with the fierce sun and heat of North Africa. The painting was executed by Henry Stahlhut, who is best known today for the many covers he painted for Gourmet magazine in the 1950s and 60s. He also did important work in the Art Deco period, including a poster for the 1939-40 World's Fair in New York, which provided a dizzying, high-level view of the fair's location in metropolitan New York. Stahlhut lived in Brooklyn when he did this painting, and a label with his name and address is attached to the reverse. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible painting is 12 inches high by 8.5 inches wide.)
