"Brotherly Love", Art Deco Masterwork in Gold for Elks Memorial, 1926

About the Item

A true Art Deco masterpiece, painted as a final study for one of a series of large murals for the National Elks Memorial in Chicago, finished in 1926, this large gold-hued scene depicts two angels representing "Brotherly Love," each holding a symbol of the Elks fraternal organization. One holds the antlers of the elk and the other a loving cup, and the pairing makes reference to murals to either side at the Memorial that represent thoughts and purpose -- "the beginning and end of all high purpose." The painting was made by Eugene Savage, and this commission was the first of several over the years that made him America's leading Art Deco muralist. The Elks murals have incredible detail -- such as the attention to each figure's elaborate drapery reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites -- while his later murals for the Texas Centennial and his famous Hawaiian series for Matson Shipping Line's S. S. Lurline -- were more stylized and streamlined. The painting is signed on the reverse. It is oil on paper mounted on board.
