"Children of the Crucible", Striking Art Deco Mural by Beck, T. Roosevelt quote
About the Item
This important and very rare mural study, executed in oil on canvas, was painted by Dunbar Beck in the 1930s, evidently for a project that was never completed. The painting depicts in classic WPA manner a vertical array of Americans climbing their way to success, ranging from newly-arriving immigrants at the bottom of the stairs, to middle-class professionals at the top. Again in the WPA mural manner, there is an instructive text below that quotes Theodore Roosevelt: "We Americans are Children of the Crucible -- We Must be Americans and Nothing Else." Beck is known for painting "The Return of Timothy Pickering," a mural for the lobby painting of the US Post Office in Danvers, Massachusetts, as well as several for the 1939-1940 World's Fair in New York. The painting is varnished and is very fresh, aside from a couple of small paint losses; it is not matted or framed.
