Chinese Watercolor of a Sampan on Paper, circa 1800

About the Item

The large Chinese watercolor on European paper depicts a starboard view of a two-master sailing ship with one man sailing the vessel while two passengers can clearly be seen inside through the open window. Another vessel can be seen in the middle ground progressing down another water channel. The light orange-red tinge of sundown washing the ship as it sails on choppy waters with islands and distant mountains in the background.

Based on HMS Dublin of 1755, a total of 14 ships of the Bellerophon class were built, and a total of 93 "Common" class vessels were built in all. Mr Timothy Akers MA, B.Sc (Hon's) Maritime Research Archaeologist. An Account of the Fitting out of H.M.S. "Bellerophon." This affords a brilliant example of what can be done in the Navy, when a ship's company are commanded by officers possessing the requisite union of due seamanlike and administrative qualities, and I give it as a high standard by which all such may be measured, and as an appropriate pendant to the first section of our subject. By John Varley
    Located in Keego Harbor, MI
A tranquil and peaceful watercolor on paper depicting a landscape with a fortress by English artist John Varley. Circa early 1800s. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, ""Varley's landscapes are graceful and solemn in feeling, and simple and broad in treatment, being worked with a full brush and pure fresh transparent tints, usually without any admixture of body-colour. Though his works are rather mannered and conventional, they are well considered and excellent in composition. Some of his earlier water-colours, including his ""Views of the Thames,"" were painted upon the spot, and possess greater individuality than his later productions, which are mainly compositions of mountain and lake scenery, produced without direct reference to nature."" An opportunity to own an antique watercolor a well-known English watercolorist. From a private collection. Original gallery tag on verso from Squire Gallery. Dimensions: 14”h x 15.25”w x 1”d (framed). In good vintage condition. John Varley (1778-1842) was an English watercolor painter and astrologer, and a close friend of William Blake.
