About the Item
Exhibited at the Thirteenth Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1933, this large WPA-influenced painting by Arthur D. Brooks depicts a nude female torso in a classical setting, complete with columned temple front, scroll and Greek urn. The artist includes a cluster of column elements to one side, including an Ionic column capita and a fluted column shaft, as well as an arched Roman facade, and a Greek pedimented building. Brooks was an important Ohio artist and exhibited frequently at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
