About the Item

This exquisite Dutch vertical format oil on canvas painting from the mid-19th century depicts sheep in fields and is attributed to Karel van Contich. This is a beautifully serene scene: a flock of sheep, divided into several groups, is resting on the side of a hill. The centre of the composition is occupied by a group of sheep, neatly protected behind rocks. They receive all the light and are drawing us in. van Contich ingeniously uses a sheep on the left, who is looking directly at us, to give us the impression that we are witnesses. Perhaps we are troubling their peace. The subtle brown and green tones are nicely contrasted with the brightness of the wool. The stroke, more defined in the front, becomes more blurred in the background, creating beautiful depth. The painting is set inside a richly carved antique giltwood frame. This Dutch painting, circa 1860 would brighten any home beautifully.
