EARLY 18th CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN
About the Item
Beautiful oil painting on canvas depicting a gentleman belonging to the ancient chivalric order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus, founded in 1572 by the House of Savoy. The protagonist of the painting wears a typical wig of the early eighteenth century and a dress that reflects the style of the Louis XIV era. On the character's chest you can see the characteristic green ribbon of the Mauritian order and a cross hanging from it. With his right hand, the gentleman leans on a stick. The painting was created by a portraitist active in northern Italy in the early 18th century, and the work is characterized by its great realism and meticulous attention to detail. In the past, the painting belonged to a baron linked to the House of Savoy. Finally, as regards the frame in which the painting is located, it is also ancient, made of carved and gilded pine wood.
