"Family w/ Rocking Horse, " Ptg. by WPA Artist De Forest Stull

About the Item

Dated 1945, just before the end of World War II, this important and powerful painting by John De Forest Stull shows an embracing mother and father standing behind their chubby child on a rocking horse. Muscled and craggy, the figures are reminiscent of the work of William and Marguerite Zorach and other important painters active in the 1930s and 1940s. Stull graduated from Yale in 1933, then worked with Ezra Augustus Winter on the murals of Radio City Music Hall before involving himself in one of two New Jersey chapters of the Works Progress Administration/Federal Arts Project.

He was born to a poor immigrant family on the Lower East Side fueling his subject interest in the downtrodden. His subjects included industrial strikes, especially in the coal mining and steel-production centers. He did much illustration-cartoon work for the New York Tribune newspaper, Vanity Fair magazine and the politically 'left-wing' publication, "New Masses." Some of his other pieces focused on the hypocrisy of government figures, especially members of the United States Senate...
