"Flamenco Dancer, " Brilliant Art Deco-Cubist Oil Painting by Schyl, 1920s

About the Item

A brilliant example of Cubist-influenced Art Deco painting, this view of a young flamenco dancer, with a wide-brimmed hat and roses on her hair, was painted by Jules Schyl, one of Sweden's leading Modernist artists in the 1920s and 30s. Schyl was born in Denmark but spent most of his career in Sweden, exhibiting widely across Europe in the 1920s through the 1950s. In 1924, Schyl joined "The Twelve," a southern Swedish modernist group, several members of which had studied under André Lhote in Paris in 1912. Schyl's work is collected by the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm, the Malmo Museum and the Art Gallery of Vikingsberg, among others. The painting is oil on canvas, and is beautifully framed.

The Black male figure is the height of fashion in his tuxedo, and the female figure is wearing a thin, diaphanous, pale green dress...
