About the Item
Amazing, almost three dimensional original artwork by calligrapher, illustrator and artist, Sam Fink. The piece features Einstein holding a violin. It was painted on board but also seems to have a raised paper form of Einstein in the center of the piece (this is the part that appears three dimensional - even his mustache stands out from the work). It has an Einstein quote in the background (almost appears as if it was written on a chalkboard). The quote reads," The man who has discovered an idea that allows us to penetrate, to whatever slight degree, the eternal arcanum of nature has been granted a great favor. If in addition he experiences the help, sympathy and recognition of his time, he attains almost more happiness than one man can bear."
This piece is framed (shadow box style). It measures 26 7/8" H x 22 7/8" W x 3"D

Sam Fink was an artist, a calligrapher and an illustrator. He was an artist of inimitable range. He learned to hand-letter from his father. He also studied at the National Academy and the Art Students' League. For decades, he worked as an art director at Young & Rubicam and later, he taught at the Pratt Institute. For more than 20 years, Fink educated and entertained adults and children with his illustrated texts of American history. He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2006 with the release of The Constitution of the United States of America which had won a Gold IPPY. He also published The Declaration of Independence: The Words that Made America. Sam died in 2011 at the age of 95.

Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted). Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva.
