Henry George Glyde Oil Painting (1906-1998) - Canada Free shipping within the United States and Canada. Henry George Glyde was born in Luton, England in 1906. He studied at the Royal Academy in London, majoring in mural design and the history of techniques and materials. At age 29 Henry George Glyde moved to Calgary, Alberta where he became head of the Art School at the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art, now known as the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Henry Glyde’s art was influenced by his interest in the harshness of the climate, and the size and diversity of the terrain in western Canada . Every summer from 1936 to 1966 Henry Glyde taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts , heading up the painting department. He acted as a volunteer advisor at the Cultural Affairs Branch of the Alberta Government. In 1943, Glyde and A.Y Jackson were commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada to paint the construction of the Alaska Highway. In 1946 Glyde moved to Edmonton to form the art department at the University of Alberta. In 1947 Glyde became the head of the Department of Fine Arts and continued as head until his retirement in 1966. Henry Glyde was a member of many professional art associations throughout his lifetime. He was elected president of the Alberta Society of Artists in 1945. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1949, and in 1954 was the national president of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Henry George Glyde’s career was closely tied to the development of the arts in Alberta. Henry Glyde is best known for his rhythmic oil paintings of figures and landscapes. He was also well known as a book illustrator. His work has been exhibited throughout Canada and internationally. His murals can be seen on many public buildings including Alberta History in the Reading Room in the Rutherford Library at the University of Alberta, and the Medicine Hat Public Library in the south of the Province. Following a major retrospective exhibition of Glyde’s work in 1987 at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the estate of Henry Glyde in 1998 donated an impressive collection of 573 works to the Glenbow Museum. This estate donation made the Glenbow museum and Alberta the representative of Glyde’s enormous artistic legacy. Henry Glyde passed away in 1998.
