Jak Katarikawe East African Artist, Painting of Hut with Moon and Animals

About the Item

Beautiful oil on board by noted Ugandan painter Jak Moses Katarikawe, (b. 1940) Untitled. Subject: Hut and Animals with Moon. In excellent condition, framed. The painting measures: 25" H x 36" W. Frame measures: 27" H x 42" W Jak Katarikawe is one of the most prominent East African artists and has attracted worldwide attention. He was born in circa 1940 in Kigezi, Uganda. He never received any formal education, though he was inspired both by his mother's paintings on the walls of their house and murals in the Catholic Cathedral at Rushoroza. The first 25 years of his life he worked as a casual labourer, before Professor David Cook, a lecturer of literature at Makarere University in Kampala, discovered his talents and supported his artistic endeavours. After Idi Amin's seizure of power beginning in 1970, Katarikawe withdrew from the capital to his rural home in Kigezi, and later moved to Nairobi, Kenya, in 1981, where he has been living since. He joined the then newly established Paa Ya Paa arts center and became, from 1984 onwards, one of the top Gallery Watatu artists.

  • Lotan Lotan Surreal Painting Signed and Dated 1974, Artist on Top of the World
    By Lotan Lotan
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Surreal painting in excellent condition by Arizona artist Lotan Lotan. Depicts the artist on top of the world - a self-portrait. Framed. Signed lower right by the artist and dated 1974. Painting measures: 24" H x 20" W. Frame measures: 31 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Lotan Lotan (1905-1985) Little is known about Lotan Lotan prior to 1952 when he arrived in Arizona in an MG accompanied by his girlfriend Ruth and their pet Bulldog, Sir Oliver Cedric. Ruth, who would later become his wife, was also an artist. In a letter that same year to California artist Claude Buck, Lotan claims to be "living in the middle of the desert painting like never before." He goes on to state in the letter the he had recently changed his name to Lotan Lotan because it was part of "losing the past and becoming an entirely new person . . .doing my best to create a new painting as well as a new personality." Lotan evidently had no problem stretching the truth to help create his new persona. During his Arizona years he typically signed his paintings "Lotan Lotan, PHD, MD" even though he was neither a PHD or a Medical Doctor. Throughout his life he claimed to have received degrees in medicine and a PHD in art from the University of Berlin in 1926. In a 1966 interview with The Carefree Enterprise he recounts how he used to operate a medical clinic and a portrait studio side by side in London. "At the same time I was treating the social outcasts of the Soho district, I was also receiving portrait commissions from the royalty and political nobility of Europe and America." He goes on in the interview to state that he did commissioned portraits of King George V of England, President Warren Harding...

  • William Gropper Important New York Artist and Caricaturist Painting, "Mug-Wump"
    By William Gropper
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Politically charged oil on canvas by Depression Era New York artist William Gropper. Painting measures: 20" H x 16" W. Frame measures: 24" H x 20" W. Signed lower right and in excellent condition. Created circa 1930s. Titled on the verso “Mug-Wump”. Provenance: Two Gallery Labels seen on the verso; Heritage Gallery, L.A. & Rowe Gallery, San Francisco. A mugwump was known as a person who remained independent (as in politics), one who remained undecided or neutral, not taking a definitive side. One whose “mug” was on one side of the fence and whose “wump” was on the other, so to speak. New-York born artist William Gropper (1897-1977) was a painter and cartoonist who, with caricature style, focused on social concerns. During the 1930s, working as a part of the Federal Arts Project, he produced some of the most gripping social protest works of the Great Depression. Subjects included industrial strikes, especially in the coal mining and steel-production centers. He did much illustration-cartoon work for the New York Tribune newspaper, Vanity Fair magazine and the politically 'left-wing' publication, "New Masses." Some of his other pieces focused on the hypocrisy of government figures, especially members of the United States Senate...

  • Henry Stanier British Born Artist, Beautiful Orientalist Painting, 1859
    By Henry Stanier
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Orientalist oil on board by Henry Stanier (1831-1894) in the ornate original frame. Titled “The Narghuileh” and dated 1859. Signed on the verso Stanier and initialed H.S. Titled on the verso in the artist's hand. Measures: 12" H x 9" W inches. Frame measures: 24" H x 21" W The painting is in good condition. Henry Stanier (1831-1894) Stanier was born in Birmingham, England (1831-1894) but lived also in Spain, where he passed away in Granada in 1894. During the 1880s and 1890s Stanier often painted the view from the Mirador de San Nicolas. Inspired by the rich cultural legacy of Granada’s Moorish past, he also produced a number of carefully observed architectural subjects, sometimes incorporating picturesque or exotic figures in an Orientalist vein. Such scenes were occasionally exhibited in London at the Royal Society of British Artists, although it appears that Stanier found a ready market for his work amongst Granada’s passing foreign tourists. As a young artist in his home city of Birmingham, Stanier had been an active exhibitor of flower pieces and historical genre scenes. Later, in the 1860s and 1870s, he painted Egyptian landscapes...
