Lambertus Hardenberg (The Hague 1822-1900), Dated 1893 Construction site in Amsterdam Signed and dated ‘L Hardenberg/Amsterdam 1893’ (lower left) Oil on canvas, 55x45 cm (incl. frame: 75x63 cm) Width frame: 8 cm Weight: 4.75 kg Conditon: good condition, relined and minor retouching Lambertus Hardenberg (Den Haag 1822-1900) Hardenberg is mostly known as a Dutch cityscape painter, but he also played and immense role in the artistic society of The Hague. In this ‘Hofstad’ (or ‘Court city’) many young Dutch painters attended the academy and tried to become a successful professional artist. Hardenberg was born in The Hague and played a central role in organizing drawing evenings in his studio with life drawing models. In 1847 he even cofounded the famous painter society Pulchri Studio which was essential to the upcoming ‘Hague School’. Hardenberg’s style would however never become so atmospheric as most of his Hague School friends. Just like his colleague and friend Jan Weissenbruch, his style can better be described as ‘realistic’. Together with Weissenbruch, Hardenberg travelled through the Netherlands painting various landscapes and cities. They did not focus on the main squares, churches, windmills or other landmarks. They preferred to depict the ‘forgotten’ parts of the city and countryside, such as back alleys, shipyards and construction sites. This late painting in Hardenberg’s oeuvre depicts a construction site in Amsterdam, a fast changing city at the end of the nineteenth century. In the 1880s and 1890s mainly younger impressionist painters such as George Hendrik Breitner captured the developments of the Dutch capital. This makes it even more special that Hardenberg, a conventional and well-established painter, decided to depict this construction site. Although it is painted in a traditional realistic style, Hardenberg modernised this scene by drawing a straight horizontal line in the composition. This unique painting gives a beautiful and honest insight in the modernisation of Amsterdam at the end of the nineteenth century.
