This beautiful large antique floral continental school still life, is oil on canvas laid down on board and is mid-19th century in date. The painting features a sumptuous bouquet of flowers in a classical vase with fruit painted in rich vibrant textured colors. The background is contrasted by an aerial perspective landscape with radiant blue skies and floating clouds with deep dark shadows of a giant tree. The artist has captured the beauty of the bouquet with the contrasting landscape, giving the composition significant depth. Housed in its richly carved giltwood frame which is decorated with ancanthus leaves. The term includes the painting of dead animals, especially game. Live ones are considered animal art, although in practice they were often painted from dead models. The still life category also shares commonalities with zoological and especially botanical illustration, where there has been considerable overlap among artists.
