    Oil on board by Carl Brandien (1886-1965) - Street in Kyoto with red lanterns. Titled on the verso: “Street in Old Kyoto, Japan” Signed lower right and titled lower left “Kyoto” Measures: 20" H x 16" W. Frame: 27.5" H x 23.5" W. Carl William Brandien was born of Danish Parents in 1886 in New York City. His father died when he was only a child and he was placed in an institution. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France in WWI and was Honorably Discharged in 1919. Brandien studied in Paris and was a member of the Art Student’s League in New York. In 1916 he became a National Academician. He was an Illustrator for Life Magazine "A Bit of Old New York" and other periodicals in the early 1900s.
